The aim of the project is to develop a repository for strengths-based online learning materials accessible by a suite of teacher education courses in the Faculty of Education at Charles Sturt University to enhance the child protection preparation of students.
Significant & Benefit
At least 30 course and subject staff, as well as Professional Experience Unit staff would all benefit initially from the project providing readily accessible and updated information on child protection. The project could potentially extend to reach over 3000 students who study specific teacher education courses through the Faculty of Education
Through the initiative students will gain an integrated, extended and enhanced understanding of the skills required for child protection responsibilities as a teacher – as compared to brief training currently offered. Students will learn about, explore, and reflect on authentic, complex (often sensitive) child abuse issues in a guided online environment. Additionally, students will have ongoing access to the depository of multi-media community/curriculum resources and best-practice strategies for child protection. Preparation will be explicitly linked to student’s Professional Experience subjects and implicitly accessible and integrated throughout the life of their course – demonstrating an ongoing commitment to students in this crucial element of teacher preparation.
Through this project Course Directors, Subject Coordinators and Professional Experience Unit staff will have ongoing access to consistent, up to date child protection materials. Staff can be assured that materials that have been specifically designed by experts in the field for teacher preparation. The depository will be in the form of an Interact2 site and easily accessible for staff. The format will be inherently compatible with current CSU course and subject design (thus requiring few change management strategies). Staff will be able to access reliable resources across courses and campuses rather than individually sourcing child protection information each time a session is required.
Dr Angela Fenton
To develop and evaluate an innovative CSU strengths-based child protection online resource and training depository, in the form of a purposed Interact2 site.
- An Interact2 site: Child Protection: A Strengths Approach is developed
- Strengths-based online/interactive child protection and mandatory reporting training resources are developed and accessible to a pilot teacher education course/subject at CSU via the I2 site.
- An Interim Report: Evaluation of pilot group/site is completed
- Based on evaluation – materials are revised and final I2 site is released for use by all students studying teacher education courses at CSU from 201630.
- A Final Evaluation Report is submitted.
